Notes: The title translates as "Hermes artist card puzzles" and there were 5 cards issued along with a bag. The envelope is crucial because the key to the puzzle is written on the back. Cards are numbered as follows:
The main card is "A". This would be shown to participants, and they would choose (without saying it out loud!) their favourite star. Then they would have to say whether this star could be found on card 1, 2, 4 and/or 8. When "yes", the number at the bottom corner would be noted, when "no" the card would be discarded. Noting and then saying out loud the total reached, card A could be used to work out which star had been chosen, by counting down from top left to bottom. Then you can seem to be a mind-reader, by correctly "guessing" the chosen film star.
Here's an example. Let's say you (secretly) choose Lil Dagover. The mind-reader asks: Is the star on card 1? You say yes. The mind-reader notes this number. Is the star on card 2? You say no. The mind-reader discards the number. Is the star on card 4? Yes! The number is duly noted. And what about card 8? Yes! Also noted. Now the mind-reader adds up the numbers 1, 4 and 8 to make a total of 13. Then, using the main card A and starting top left, he counts down 13 numbers to reach the name: Lil Dagover! High jinks ensue, at least for a couple of minutes, until people work out what's going on or simply get bored.
There is a similar French card set issued by Toni-Banan. The Toni-Banan set shows different film stars, but is played exactly the same way as the Richter set.
