Issuing Company: Goldenberg, Inc., Phila., Pa.|
Country of Issue: USA
Year of Issue: 1934
Number of Cards in Set:
Card Size: 2 3/8" x 3"
Issued as insert with what product: Butter Scotch Candy
Notes: Checklist incomplete. Cards were issued with red, green, blue, or brown tones. The same card can be found in different colors. There were multiple cards for each number. Card number 6 appears to be short-printed.
These cards show puzzles on the front. You are supposed to solve the puzzle to figure out the name of a 1934 film star. The stars are not identified on the cards. There was a reward offered to any boy or girl that guessed the correct answer to a complete set of 10 cards numbered 1 to 10. I have not seen a number 6 card from this set, so it is probable that the number 6 card was short-printed to make it more difficult to claim a prize. There were 14 different prizes offered on the backs of the cards and on the wrapper. A winner could choose the prize they wanted from the list.
Date info: The wrapper from this set shows a date of 1934.
To make this checklist more fun, I am showing pictures of all the cards I have seen for this set. Most of these came from an interesting discussion of this set on the Vintage Non-Sports Cards Chat Board, instigated by Dan Calandriello, while another came from Jim Davis. The solutions to the puzzles on these cards were figured out by various collectors who responded to this post. You are invited to try to figure out the names of the movie stars from this set. When you think you have all the answers, a link at the end of the checklist will show you the names of the stars. Note that there is no authoritative answer key available, these answers were solved by collectors and there is a chance some might be wrong. If you have any more of these cards, please email me scans (and solutions if you know them) so I can make this checklist as complete as possible.
