Notes: Checklists for the Numbered Set, B Set, and C Set are incomplete. Complete checklists are presented for the D Set, E Set, and F Set. Blank-backed. These are paper thin and were used as labels on small boxes of matches.
The checklists here cover seven different Vlinder sets, totalling over 800 cards. All the Vlinder cards feature a distinctive bright yellow border. These sets were issued from about the late 1950s through the mid 1970s. These are often found in less than perfect condition because they had to be removed from a match box.
These sets are very interesting because they cover a period of time not often seen on movie star trading cards. Very few movie star sets were issued in the 1960s and 1970s, and the Vlinder sets are brimming with stars not seen on very many cards. They are also interesting since they show a mixture of movie stars, TV stars, and musical performers. They show Elvis Presley in the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s. They trace the Beatles from their beginnings in the mid-1960s to the early days after their breakup, with a bearded George Harrison and a card showing Wings. They show James Bond star Sean Connery as Bond and a future James Bond, Roger Moore, as Ivanhoe and The Saint.
There are cards for the following movie stars that are not found on many other cards: Sammy Davis Jr., Jane Fonda, Peter Sellers, Julie Andrews, Steve McQueen, Peter O'Toole, James Coburn, Mia Farrow, and Raquel Welch. The following TV stars make rare trading card appearances: Raymond Burr, Dick van Dyke, Patrick McGoohan, Diana Rigg, Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, and Donna Douglas. Music stars are not often found on trading cards, and the following big stars can be found on Vlinder cards: Roy Orbison, Frankie Avalon, Dusty Springfield, Nancy Sinatra, Neil Diamond, The Supremes, Barbra Streisand, Sonny and Cher, Ray Stevens, Chubby Checker, Elton John, Cat Stevens, Donna Summer, Tom Jones, Black Sabbath, The Who, Mick Jagger, and other members of the Rolling Stones. The Vlinder cards even pay homage to a few retired or deceased stars like Gary Cooper, Errol Flynn, Cary Grant, Johnny Weissmuller, Charlie Chaplin, and Marlene Dietrich.
The Vlinder cards are a fun and historical grouping of cards.
The Vlinder match boxes were apparently packaged in larger packages that contained their own larger labels with a picture of a star from the current card series and some details about the card numbers in the current series. Click here for more details about these larger Vlinder labels.
This is most certainly two different sets. It is very difficult to tell the two sets apart, as the style of the sets are almost identical. Each set was apparently issued in multiple groups, so there are some minor differences in the font style used for different groups of cards. For some groups, these differences are not big enough to be able to easily distinguish between the two sets. One of the sets appears to have ended at number 120, while the second set extends out to at least number 144.
Date info: It appears the first set of these was issued in the late 1950s, probably about 1959. Ivanhoe was a TV series in 1958 and 1959, and Lassie and Jeff appeared together on TV from 1954 to 1957. The second set was probably issued much later, in about 1964. The cards of the Beatles date the set to about 1964 better than anyone else I've looked at.
Since it is very difficult to separate these two sets, I'm checklisting them both together. Where two cards are shown with the same number, I will attempt to list the 1959 card first, and the 1964 card second, though I will probably get some of these wrong.

This set features both movie and TV stars and musical performers. This set was probably issued in about 1965, as Patrick McGoohan's character of John Drake was on TV from 1964 to 1966, and the other stars seem to fit that year very well.
