Notes: Collector Fred Sanders recalled his youthful days as a card collector in the September/October 1967 issue of "The Cartophilic Notes and News." "Edwards, Ringer & Bigg during 1923 issued a set of 50 CINEMA STARS in one of their brands called 'Klondyke.' While cycling along a country lane I noticed a bright golden carton. Getting down from my bicycle I picked it up. It was empty except for the cigarette card left inside. The trade name on the packet was 'Klondyke.' No one in our village had heard of them, let alone seen them. I rode over to a neighbouring hamlet one evening, a week or so later, to see the head cow-man at a large farm there. He saved cards for me from his packets of 'Gold Flake,' and usually he went each Tuesday (market-day) to the town eight miiles away. He might know something about the 'Klondyke' cigarettes, I surmised. He did! In fact he had taken a fancy to them and had several of the 'CINEMA STARS' cards for me along with some 'Gardening Hints' from 'Gold Flake.' So I came to possess, as the weeks went by, cards of Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Dustin Farnum, W. S. Hart and others. The cow-man purchased a supply of them each Tuesday at the only tobacconist stocking these cigarettes. Then came a day when the 'Klondyke' cards ceased. Their source had dried up. 'He's not a-stocking them any more,' said Jack, the Cow-man. 'It's only me what a-buys them,' he says, 'So it's a-back to the 'Gold Flake' at six-pence a packet.'"
