Notes:

Date info: The Cameric Cigarette Card Club "Notes and News" magazine mentions this set as a new issue in its Mar-Apr 1957 issue. I'm placing a date of 1957 on this set, though it could have been issued in late 1956.

In the Jan-Feb 1964 issue of the Cameric Cigarette Card Club "Notes and News" magazine, there is a writeup by editor A. E. Arnold about how Clevedon Confectionary has recently gone out of business because of excessive business taxes:

"Both Mr. R. Greenbank (Blackpool) and our secretary, Ted Knight, send press cuttings about the closing down of a confectionery business because of taxation. One extract is headed "Purchase Tax killed business" and the other "Tax on lollipops licks him."

"Here we are not concerned with the economic or fiscal aspects of this news, but only, and perhaps selfishly, with its consequences for card collectors."

"The firm is Clevedon Confectionery (Blackpool) Ltd. which (as reported) starting with four people in a back street, became in ten years a 60,000 Great Britain Pounds (GBP) factory with 150 employees producing over one million packets of sweets a week. They specialised in children's novelty sweets with toffee cigarettes their best selling line. But purchase tax, of which the firm have paid 18,000 GBP since it was imposed, has killed the business."

"It seems that in addition to the tax of 25 per cent on the "cigarette cards" in every packet (which has been operative for a long time) there has been for many months a further tax of 15 per cent on the sweets."

"This is all very sad; for the manufacturer who has gone into voluntary liquidation, particulaly for the employees who lost their jobs, partially for the children who lost these particular toffees, and in a minor degree for us collectors who have lost one source of supply. Actually the cards were not particularly good, but they had to be collected."
